"When I think of 'the big five’ today, I picture the icons of the African landscape. It is painful to remember that this term was coined by game hunters to refer to the most challenging animals to hunt. United on the same canvas, I painted the ‘big five’- lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, and Cape buffalo— to reference the constant struggle between power and survival that these species, and many others, face."
