This painting is sold framed and ready to hang in a contemporary black floater style frame (please see image 2).
 
When painting this portrait, my first decision was choosing a primary a reference image from a selection I had taken. I had taken quite a few ‘traditional’ headstudies showing the antelope facing forwards, but I kept coming back to the one where he glanced back over his shoulder. To me, this one most encapsulated the life and instincts of a prey animal. I titled this piece ‘Twists and Turns’ not only in reference to the bongo’s spiralled horns, but to also signal the unpredictability of life as a prey animal living on high alert, when stillness can break into flight in only a heartbeat.
